Hi guys,
I’ve started looking In to building a fume hood for my work. Up until now I have just been using an inline fan connected to ducting to suck some fumes away but it’s not great for things like distillations.
I moved up in the world a little recently just by buying one of those ‘doll’s house’ size grow tents and have been utilising that as a fume hood but it’s a little small and so not that great.
…and so, iv essentially landed at building a wooden box - which is fine.
My questions are actually less regarding the actual fume hood itself, but more to do with the practicality of building the frame I will attach clamps and everything to.
I was thinking of using threaded rod for this purpose and then using the same sort of clamps I use to attach my 3 fingered clamps to my current stands.
The thing is, if I do use threaded rod, then what would be the best way to keep it sturdy? Do I drill holes through the wood box, put the rods through the holes and then attach nuts on either side of the wood to hold it there? The thing is if I do that, I can’t adjust them, I’ll only be able to move the horizontal ones up and down.
Another option was to use something like galvanised conduit instead - find the thinnest size they do and use that. Useful because it’s abundant but also they do attachments for the ends and to attach it to the hood.
I’m leaning towards the threaded rod at the mo, I suppose if I put enough of the vertical ones in at regular enough intervals, I won’t need to move them left or right, u and down is likely much more useful.
Has anyone else here invested time and effort into building a fume hood like this? How did you tackle it all? Choice of materials for your stands that you clamp stuff to? Any general advise? Anything you struggled with I should be aware of?
I just figured I would see if anyone else here had been down this road…I’m sure T least one person will have!
