Introduction
This topic is a detailed description of procedures, which have to be done in order to form racemic methamphetamine hydrochloride crystals. Racemic methamphetamine hydrochloride (d,l-meth) can't be recrystallized into large shards like d-methamphetamine hydrochloride. For a d,l-methamphetamine isomer separation, you need to carry out different procedures.
Equipment and Glassware:
- Beakers 800 mL x2; 150 mL x2;
- Pyrex dish (crystallization tray);
- Funnel;
- Filter paper;
- Heating plate;
- Buchner flask and funnel;
- Vacuum pump;
- Spatula;
- Glass rod;
- Measure cylinder 100 mL;
- Laboratory scales (optional);
Reagents:
- Methamphetamine hydrochloride (150 g) aqueous solution;
- Distilled water ~400 mL;
- Ethanol 88% 50 mL;
- Ethyl acetate ~70 mL;
- Acetone ~70 mL;

Procedure
1. A saturated methamphetamine hydrochloride (150 g) aqueous solution is diluted with water (150 mL) in a 800 mL beaker. A more fluid solution is better filtered with a paper filter.
2. The solution is filtered through a paper filter into a crystallization tray.
3. The solution is evaporated to an methamphetamine hydrochloride crystals at constant heating 50-70℃ for 3 days. This method doesn't allow to get methamphetamine hydrochloride shards (ice).
4. The resulting methamphetamine hydrochloride is transferred into a 800 mL beaker and poured with a mixture of 88% ethanol 50 ml with water 50 ml until dissolved.
5. Next, the solution is brought to 250-300 mL with an aqueous alcohol solution (1:1; H2O:EtOH).
6. The solution is evaporated at room temperature.
7. The evaporation time may take ~1.5 months.
8. A mixture of ethyl acetate with acetone (1:1) 80 mL is added to the crystals and mixed.
9. Methamphetamine hydrochloride crystals are filtered through a porous Schott filter.
10. It is washed with a portion of an ethyl acetate and acetone mixture.
11. Methamphetamine hydrochloride is dried to a constant weight.
