Go around and search the smell of weed or look for people who looks like pot-heads. What about making a marketplace where you can easily find a dealer near you?

What if the buyer isn't a legitimate buyer at all? What if he makes many orders like a loyal customer would just to gather intel on dead drop locations which are then put under survelliance? You have the wrong idea about this. Many factors come into play here, besides location the exact time is important, also no one ever knows how many people are working under the same flag. For example, in one city can work 30 people and if LE will buy up everything, then let's thank them for the proceeds. Match the geography of movement is almost impossible if approached intelligently.
How much time, effort and money should be spent on this is difficult to imagine. As a result, the investigation becomes so expensive that it ceases to be profitable.

But still dont think only of yourself. Think of the buyer too or the employee.
Employees can be corrupted by the coppers and Im sure they would do anything to shorten their time even if that includes feeding them some customers or even you, the head or the next in line above them.

This imaginary marketplace could be compromised by the cops. Do you really want to get arrested even before you even get your hands on the drugs?

Also you would need to find a such platform. We know youre talking about an escrow system kind of platform but who and why and where would someone make such a platform?

We are not saying this is impossible as this is how dark web markets world but please consider how many people this would involve, the scale.

How will the cops compromise you before you get your hands on substances?
How many cops need to be involved if there are going to be hundreds of thousands of orders on the market every day?
How many events do we know where the arrest of one small market where goods were purchased and delivered by mail led to the arrest of hundreds of people? We know such examples.
How many events do we know where arrests of markets where vendors worked with dead drops led to multiple arrests of people? We know of no such examples.

Delivery of goods by dead drops is much safer and anonymous and faster than any other method of drug transfer.
The distribution system is primitive and simple. LE are not able to effectively counter this method of distribution and identify the supply chain of goods when thousands of people are building a business and never even see each other.

Call us crazy but we do not trust the dead-drop system. This system is unreliable because of *greed. Imagine this mister: just how a shady vendor might scam you on AlphaBay just like that some dead-drop dealer might. We get that there will be things to avoid this but still, we cannot stand by it with this flaw in mind. A buyer might say the package was never there cuz the vendor never placed anything, the vendor might even send someone to check and boom the cops creep in and get your employee and sooner or later he will crack up and you are completely FUCKED.

Something to think about is also the coverage of this kind of OP. This idea could only work in dense populate arias, the more sellers the better and the same goes for customers.

Now lets talk bad actors and cops. You said that its impossible to catch someone plant a dead-drop or pick it up but we would like to say the opposite. First thing that comes to mind is "yeah sure maybe you might not catch someone putting something somewhere but i bet you can catch someone picking something up, for sure". Lets say you are a seller and you have to leave a package for a buyer, maybe you wont ever get caught but i can assure you the buyer will slip, he will end up betting caught when obtaining the goods. Now think the same scenario but imagine the goods were planted by the cops/bad actors (because the platform is semi compromised) in order to catch him because maybe he is of importance or the feds just wanna ruin his life.

This design only protects the vendor or so called dealer while giving the buyer no deniable possibility.

Everything is learned by comparison. When we talk about buying or selling drugs, we can't find a 100% safe way. In any interpretation, we can say that the distribution system is flawed.
We have to think under the assumption that the buyer and the seller in most cases do not want to cheat each other, if there is a problem we have to solve it based on the data we can gather from the parties in the deal.
The dealer can also send a package of laundry detergent, but say it's cocaine.

When we talk about selling, we need to understand what is important:
-Speed of delivery to the customer.
-Safety of the seller.
-Safety of the buyer.

If you're a darknet dealer who takes the correct precautions it will be almost impossible to find out who you are as things stand today. For an arrest to be made in any situation they have to have something which is often not enough for court but they know most people will take a plea before sitting and fighting. NEVER say a word to LE outside of LAWYER. If your in the system they will get you name so dont lie about that because that gives them a reason to charge you with something. My name is such and such and I want my lawyer. If you were not caught with video evidence, or something to strengthen a case that is more often than not weak then you can usually have it all tossed during the preliminary hearing which they always try an get you to wave. Trials are expensive for them and they have to convince a jury of your guilt based on what they have which will come out when your lawyer files for a motion of discovery. And one last thing that has always worked for me and for the generations before me is be anonymous out their just as much as you are here.
