Who
Energy Control is a Harm Reduction program and Chem-Safe is a project initiative of it, both belong to the ABD Group, a Spanish non-profit organization.Our team is made up of a group of professionals from various disciplines and volunteers who work enthusiastically to provide services close to people and provide answers to their concerns and demands. We do not judge people's choices regarding drugs and our main goal is to help them make informed decisions and reduce the risks associated with these consumptions.
In Chem-Safe, we work from the perspective of Risk and Pleasure Management, which provides respectful and non-stigmatizing attention for addressing sexualities, diversity, and the sexualized use of substance

Energy Control was originally created in Barcelona, in 1997, a pioneer in the field of risk reduction in Spain. Chem-Safe emerged later, in 2017, also as a pioneering project, the first in Spain to address drug use in sexual contexts. Throughout these years, both projects have received recognition and awards in Spain and internationally.Where

Our approach is centered around the individual and their unique needs. We provide evidence-based information that empowers people to make free and responsible decisions regarding their health, substance use, and sexuality. By focusing on the defense of fundamental liberties and rights, our methods are grounded in the principles of human rights, health rights, and sexual and reproductive rights.Furthermore, we advocate for a change in drug policies, as current approaches have proven to be counterproductive. Our person-centered attention, commitment to providing necessary information for informed decision-making, and dedication to defending fundamental rights and liberties all contribute to our mission of promoting pleasure and risk management as well as harm reduction for the well-being of our diverse community.
METHODOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY
Our work is based on the following key assumptions:- We acknowledge and respect the existence of recreational drug use, and we don’t judge anyone’s choices regarding it.
- Taking drugs does not equal having problems. Not all drug uses are the same: some may be considered low-risk and others extremely risky or harmful.
- Drugs can have both positive and negative effects. People who use drugs are mainly searching for pleasure, and our goal it’s to provide objective information on how to balance pleasure and risks.
- Realistic, objective and adequate information is essential in the decision-making process of whether or not to take drugs.
- Responsible and moderated drug uses exist.
- Our information is valuable to both drug users and non-drug users in any context.
Pleasure and risk management & Harm Reduction
Risk and pleasure management is an approach that aims to reduce the harms associated with drug use in any context while respecting the rights and individual freedoms of people.
This approach recognizes that drug use can provide pleasure and benefits to some individuals, but it can also pose risks to health, safety, and social well-being.
It involves a process in which individuals seek to balance the pursuit of pleasure and satisfaction with the minimization of risks and negative consequences associated with certain behaviors.
In the realm of sexual health and substance use, risk and pleasure management entails making informed and conscious decisions about how to enjoy pleasurable experiences while reducing potential harm or unintended consequences. This involves understanding the risks associated with specific practices or substances, comprehending how to minimize those risks through harm reduction, and adopting appropriate protective measures.
DRUG CHECKING SERVICES
We offer a Drug Checking Service in order to inform the users about the composition of the drugs and therefore are in a position to advise them on the less risky taking of said substance. We also offer customized, non-moralistic, and scientific drug information directed at drug users.
The Drug Checking Service started operating in Spain in 1999 and since 2014 it is also offered as an International Drug Checking Service. In 2021, Chem-Safe initiated the adaptation of this service in Spain and recently this service was launched in 2023 from the International Service under the name Check your Chems.
These are an anonymous and confidential service where users can submit their drug samples for testing in order to know their composition and purity, identify adulterants and provide bespoke information.
The Drug Checking Service’s goal is to provide a drug testing/analysis service to users outside Spain, focused on the preservation of health at an affordable price. Our Drug Checking Service is specifically designed for the final users. None of our results can be used as a guarantee of the quality of any drug vendor or product. Energy Control and Chem-Safe declines all responsibility in this sense.
All profits of this service are set aside for the maintenance of this project.
In order to ensure anonymity and confidentiality, we do not share any information with anyone except the end user.
In case we want to check the veracity of a result shared by a third party, we may report whether the result matches our database or not, but in no case will we provide data that compromises these two principles. Likewise, we will not provide results from third parties.

New Enantiomer analysis
Enantiomer Analysis of methamphetamine, speed, and MDMA. These substances have a chiral center and, therefore, exist as two enantiomers, which have the same chemical formula but differ in their three-dimensional arrangement, resulting in one being the mirror image of the other. The R and S enantiomers of these substances exhibit distinct biological activity, affecting potency, duration, and the type of effects.- Identification of the R and S enantiomers of methamphetamine, speed/amphetamine, and MDMA.

ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
Thin-layer chromatography (TLC)
It can identify the active components of a very wide range of substances, differentiate between derivatives of the same group and detect the most common adulterants. The results obtained identify the active substances in a sample, but it is not possible to determine purity or concentration.- Qualitative technique.
- Allows the identification of adulterations and frauds.
- Does not differentiate between isomers of the same substance.
- Reference compounds are needed for the identification of compounds.
Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
We perform a first analysis with this technique as a screening method, for the identification of the compound or compounds in the sample. It is also used to quantify main substances such as cocaine, speed, methamphetamine, tranquilizers, ketamine and its adulterants, as well as other substances.- Quantitative technique.
- Allows the identification of NPS (New Psychoactive substances).
- Allows quantification of most substances, even if adulterated.
- Allows differentiation of positional isomers such as 4-MMC and 3-MMC by retention time with the exception of fluoroderivatives (2,3,4-FMA; 2,4-FA; 2,3,4-FEA).
Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC/MS)
We use this technique mainly to analyze compounds that are heat sensitive or require precision and sensitivity such as LSD or fentanyl.- Qualitative and quantitative technique.
- High precision and sensitivity for complex substances to be analyzed.
- It does not differentiate between isomers and enantiomers of the same substance.
Ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV-Vis)
Analytical technique used to quantify major substances, unadulterated. It allows the quantification of MDMA/Ecstasy, 4-MMC/Mephedrone, 3-MMC/Metaphedrone and 2-MMC. It is also used for substances such as 2C-B/Nexus, MDA or 6-APB.- Quantitative technique.
- Used for substances that require more precise dose adjustment to achieve the desired effects and reduce risks.
- Does not differentiate between isomers of the same substance.
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC-DAD)
We use an HPLC connected to an ultraviolet Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD), mainly to quantify LSD.- It allows us to know the concentration of LSD in blotters and droplets.
Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) with chiral column
Very similar to LC/MS, but uses a chiral column capable of resolving racemic mixtures. It is especially useful for separating enantiomers, as this cannot be achieved with the other methods mentioned above.- Qualitative and quantitative technique.
- It has the same advantages as LC/MS, but also allows the separation of enantiomers of the same substance
